five tips to save money on back-to-school shopping
Back-to-school is the second-biggest shopping season for retailers. According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $696.70 on school supplies. That's up from $684.79 last year! So parents: don’t break the bank this school year, and save with our five back-to-school savings tips!
1. take inventory
You may be surprised at what you already have and don't need to buy for back-to-school shopping this year. Before you begin shopping, take inventory. Go through your kids’ clothing, shoes, and supplies and document what they already have and what you'll need to buy this school year.
2. set a budget
Assess which items are mandatory, like the class list of required supplies, and determine a budget with this list and the inventory you took for needed items. The amount you spent last year can be a great starting point when determining a budget for this year’s back-to-school spending.
3. make a list
With the class list of required supplies in mind, and the inventory you took for needed items, make a shopping list for back-to-school items and stick to the list.
4. start early and compare prices
Comparison shop online to see who may have the best deal. Prices change throughout the back-to-school shopping season, and you never know which items may go on sale. Therefore, start your shopping early, and don’t buy everything all at once, as you may get a better deal another day.
5. buy in bulk
Buying in bulk can be a great way to save money in the long run. Certain school supplies get burned through at a ridiculous rate over the course of the school year. If you buy in bulk, you’ll save money in the long run, saving also on gas, as well as the hassle if you shop in stores.
